£10,000 for shelf space at Tesco

According to the latest MCV, games publishers and suppliers are set to be charged an annual fee of £10,000 for shelf space in Tesco stores. MCV states “the payment is non-negotiable, non-refundable and does not even guarantee business with Tesco”.

Although Tesco have distanced themselves from the new policy stating “this is not a Tesco initiated process”, they don’t seem to have put any steps in place to stop the charge. It seems the process has been set up US distribution giant Handleman.

Handleman has been handling the distribution of entertainment products for Tesco for almost a year now taking over from E-UK. According to MCV, the publishers that have been contacted by Handleman about the new agreement “have not reacted positively to proposed new trading terms”.

What do you make of Tesco’s new policy, is this the UK’s largest chain throwing their weight around or simply making the most of their position in the market? Do you buy games from Tesco yourself?
