Free Game on Xbox Live Arcade??

Scott Brodie, Danny Dyer and Matt Monson were all interns at Microsoft last summer. Unlike most interns, these 3 had bigger plans then shadowing an animator or learning from a marketing executive, they wanted to make a game. Aegis Wing is the game, free is the price, and awesome is the only word that comes to mind while playing.

The game itself plays like R-Type, sidescrolling spaceshooter where you get hit a few times and lights out. I had a difficult time on my own, then I asked the wife to play with me(She likes XBLA). I signed her on as a guest and we jumped online, found 2 others waiting and we got started. With 4 ships on screen it’s a little hard at first to keep track of the action. At first we worked independently, and we were moderately successful. One thing I didn’t realize until the game ended is that you share lives with your teammates. If you are the last man standing, getting a 1UP doesn’t extend your life, it lets one of your teammates back in. This gets frustrating when your teammates have the mental capabilities of small rodents (online not the wife), getting themselves blown up nanoseconds after they spawn.

I hadn’t fully exploited the games full potential until a few games later(with different teammates) when I received the “Epic Warrior” achievement. The wife and I had experimented with joining our 2 ships previously, a quick X button while we were close melded both ships together. The attaching ship loses motion controls but adds to the firepower of the ship it attaches to. While this was a fun novelty with 2 people, it becomes an essential tactic with four. When four ships combine their firepower, all ships take on a new silver color and have new abilities and weapons. Very 1980s Voltron, and very, very cool.

I’ve done my best to find a European release date, and I have found absolutely nothing. With any luck you PAL folk should see this badboy before the summer, my only fear by then is that the price will have changed……
