Xbox 360 outsells PS3 by over 100%

NPD, US market research guru’s have this morning revealed figures for all US console sales during the month of June.
Xbox 360 - 198,400 (+28%)
PS3 - 98,500 (+21%)
Wii - 381,800 (+13%)
As you can see, the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by a factor of 2 to 1 during the period. It’s worth remembering though that these are only US based sales, and exclude Japan where the 360 is currently trailing way behind PS3’s. It’s also unclear how the 360’s sales split across the different SKU’s - which makes it difficult to judge the success of the new Elite console.
Given these figures, it’s hardly a surprise that Microsoft didn’t take the step of announcing a price cut during E3 ‘07 earlier this month. Of course, sales for June do not reflect sales of the PS3 after Sony announced their own price cut, so it will be interesting to see how next months figures shape up.
Sony continues to insist that it doens’t really care about sales over Christmas 2007, and is instead concentrating on mass market appeal for Christmas 2008. If Microsoft can continue to retain it’s momentum, with a price cut thrown in for good measure, Sony’s happy holiday season’s may well be goosed for the next couple of years.

Your title speaks the truth and your article speaks the truth but the overall message is biased. Expect for the Wii’s sales nothing else is mention about it on the article. Thank you for disregarding the nearly 2:1 Wii to 360 ratio in your overall message.

I hope Microsoft does a price cut for this holiday season. I own a 360 and am not looking to buy one, but if that were added to the great line up of games that are coming out for Christmas, Microsoft would secure its place over Sony. It might even edge out Wii sale if they have the Core System available at $249.99.

JC, I think the article is skewed towards the xbox but remember this is a 360 website. Most of the other sites dont even mention wii sales at all.

Nothin’ but the truth? I just read an article claiming that XBox 2 sales were down 60% in the past year. Which should I believe. On another website they claim the June sales for XBox 2 were around 120,000. I don’t think this is the “no spin zone”. I guess this is a XBox 2 fan site, so what should I expect.

Crump,
We don’t claim anything. These are NPD figures, not speculation but fact.
And yes, we try to tell the truth - hence the following comments made in the article.
“…these are only US based sales, and exclude Japan where the 360 is currently trailing way behind PS3″
And later
“..Of course, sales for June do not reflect sales of the PS3 after Sony announced their own price cut, so it will be interesting to see how next months figures shape up.”
ps, it’s actually Xbox 360 - not as you say “XBox 2″
Thanks for taking part

Good news for microsoft after a bit of negative publicity (anyone heard of the lawsuits). I really don’t think the PS3 is going to have such a big share of the market this time around and it serves them right. I’m gonna be honest i’m rooting for Microsoft and so far things look good despite the news about “General Hardware Failure”. What people don’t realise is that the vast majority of 360 owners haven’t experienced any problems but it’s always the failures that get the most publicity. Anyway the batch of 360s that are currently experiencing problems will soon be dealt with.

Response to macnos:
I think you are right with a couple of things, but I have to pull you up on the comment regarding “the vast majority of 360 owners haven’t experienced any problems”. While I would agree that the majority have not had an issue, M$ have released figures saying that they have had a 33% defect rate. It is your use of the word vast that I think is a little misleading. I wonder if the figure is based on people having issues or actual boxes not working, because I know of people that have had more than 3 replacements.
Anyway, more importantly, can anyone tell me how to confirm that the XBOX I buy has the 65nm components? I have waited ages for them to sort it out and held off buying one until now. The Elite is released in the UK 24th August, but I am 99% sure that the first few runs will not contain the revised insides.

peachy,
Firstly, Microsoft have not released any figures regarding the 360’s failure rate. The 33% figure is just the number that the all knowing internet seems to have settled on. I’ve had my 360 since day 1 and never had a spot of bother with it - as have many of my friends. Perhaps the run of consoles which reached the UK for launch are less prone to the defects seen more widely in the US.
Secondly, no - nobody can tell you when the 360 you buy will have 65nm components. You’ll need to wait for an announcement from Microsoft before anyone will know. The Elite in the US doesn’t, so it follows that the UK version won’t either. Perhaps in time for the Christmas rush though.

Firstly, full marks for the speedy response. My apologies, I thought that the 33% was their figure, no worries, thanks for putting me straight. Gutted about not being able to tell the difference, gonna have to wait until M$ tell us, but the trouble is that some stores will have a boat load of stock that could have been manufactured on the old spec. So if anyone can tell me when the Falcon version will hit stores I would be very pleased. Also, will there be a price cut in the UK?

You’ll be able to tell which machines have the 65nm component from the SKU serial number on the machine. The boxes that 360’s come in have a hatch up top saying ‘lift for serial number’, so you can read it before you buy.

Hey Bleem,
Full marks yet again for the response. What SKU’s will there be on the Falcons?
Also, any news on that price cut
July 27th, 2007 at 12:13 pm
No idea on the SKU front my friend. They will probably just filter the new machines in to all types of SKU - Elite, Premium etc. The Halo 3 special edition console will probably be 95nm and sell out before they move to 65nm.
As for the price cut, apparently it’s to be announced (in the US) on the 8th August. I wouldnt expect any cuts in the UK until after that though. Revised prices will probably be £149 for the core, £199 for the premium and perhaps £279 for the Elite. It’s all speculation for the moment though.
